To be able to participate in THE CREATION-like process of image-making through painting is in a sense almost GOD-like in having the power to generate images that evoke emotions, memories, psychological conditions, elation and humilation. But this was not what led me to painting.

Painting to me is a medium of exploration wherein seemingly child-like attributes are recalled and encouraged so that we not only preserve our young innocence but also are able to reapply it in our own forced adult mind. To me, the act of painting is akin to that of a kid playing in the mud with much fervor, and that is why I believe painting is such a boon to the grown-up and bored.

To me, being armed with this enthusiasm to paint and the power to affect viewers, humbles the very constitution of my being in the participation of the creation process alone. The figures in landscape is/are thus symbolically and literally mirroring that of the artist’s existence and the co-existence with other beings within his environment, humility realized.

Specifically, painting within the genres and imbued sentimentalities of the Expressionists and the Abstract Expressionists enables one to escape the firm grip of cultural dilemma of being a second-generation Filipino-American. But as time goes on, the “escape”, has become an unattainable plight that it takes me aback toward the same dilemma of existential issues – Who am I?, Where am I? and What am I going to do?

The only personal resolution is therefore the inevitable exploration and realization that painting can be a medium of this mindful transmission of constant inquiries. Other realities open up and consistently confront the artist. The use of pop art sensibilities in realizing kitsch themes of the innate sensuality and cheapness are revealed through collages of brand names, symbols, and print advertisement. Though subtle, these somewhat “lighten” the load on the artist’s ever-questioning stance.

Humor, lies, prejudices and dreams all wrapped up are found in every brushstroke. The frustrations, joy and the uncertainties in every hue. The faces of known and unknown figures showing indifference and sincerity are explored. Comforting as well as unchartered fields peopled with trees or the interiors of dwellings co-exist with the figures. The angst and the enthusiasm of living. The Yin and Yangs of life. Art.
